Today I spoke with Alexis Zinovenko of Pride of Somerset County on LGBTQ issues in the area. When she transitioned from male to female in 2012 there were few supports available in the area. She lost her job, family, and some friends.

When I went to it in 2010, I was inspired to start blogging with my old blog CSI without Dead Bodies and continue with the current one. One of the speakers at the conference who inspired me was David DeAngelo of 2 Political Junkies.

This evening I had a good discussion of new media ventures with Rob Kall. He is the founder of OpEd News. It is an open source progressive news site where with a model similar to the original Huffington Post where volunteers contribute articles and volunteers also edit them. We discussed the need for progressive media outlets in rural areas like the Alleghenies.

This evening I had a nice conversation with Pitt-Johnstown Professor of History Paul Douglas Newman (no relation to that other Paul Newman) about the history of Native Americans in Pennsylvania. From around the year 1 AD to the 1400s there was a vibrant Native American civilization in the Mississippi region that extended up the Ohio to where Johnstown is today.
